2 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
6 T chilled, unsalted butter
3/4 cup mini chocolate chips
Lemon OR orange zest (I do about 1/2 a lemon/orange)
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 egg yolk
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease a baking sheet.
In a large bowl, sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the butter and using a pastry cutter (or your fingers) mix until crumbly. Add the lemon zest.
In a small bowl, whisk the buttermilk, egg yolk, and vanilla. Add the wet mixture to the flour mixture. Mix until combined. Stir in chocolate chips.
The dough will be VERY sticky!
On a floured surface, roll the dough into a ball and then flatten it just a little. Cut it into 6 or 8 triangles and place the wedges on the prepared baking sheet.
Optional glaze: brush a little milk over the top of the scones and sprinkle a little sugar on top before baking.
Bake 18-20 minutes or until the tops are golden. Cool on a wire rack.
